Should We Fear COVID19?
COVID19 is ravaging the world. None of us know how many will be infected, or how many will survive or die. Will it return again and ravage us worse than now, as the Spanish flu did in 1917 and 1918?
None of us know what this virus will bring.
But the question remains, should we fear?
In this article, I answer this question.
As Christians we have been called not to fear. God has said so many times in Scripture and here’s some verses that say so.
Genesis 15:1 NKJV reads, “After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”
Joshua 1:9 NKJV reads, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
Mark 4:37-40 NKJV read,
37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.
38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”
41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”
In Genesis 15:1, Abram is considering his highly successful but well-known campaign against a number of kings who had taken away the people and their possessions of the nearby lands. He’s realizing that although successful, his band is very small compared to those he fought against—perhaps they may come upon him and he be overwhelmed. God obviously was with him to give him success. Here God is promising to protect him such that he must not fear and further understand God is his shield. God used the words “Do not be afraid.” This isn’t an option, but a command.
Similarly in Joshua 1:9, God commands Joshua “do not be afraid”. This is also a command to not be afraid. It’s not an option.
Jesus’ words in Mark 4:37-40 are in the form of a question “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” We are to have faith in Him and not fear.
But this virus is deadly. Yes, it is. And as of yet, we don’t know how many will succumb to it.
We must not fear. And further we must remember that we serve the One that even the wind and the sea obey. Even COVID19 must obey Him.
Accepting that we must not fear doesn’t mean we should not take proper precautions. We must act wisely and not test Him.
Deuteronomy 6:16 NKJV reads, “You shall not tempt the LORD your God as you tempted Him in Massah.”
God does allow certain things to happen, some of which are painful. Nonetheless He has promised that all things will work together for the good of us. He has plans for each of us, to give us hope and a future.
Romans 8:28 NKJV reads, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
And Jeremiah 29:11-13 NIV reads,
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.
13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
