His Commandments

As I’ve walked in my faith over the years, I’ve found that I often need simple statements of Scripture, that I could reach to in order to set myself straight. I needed to know what is required of me—what are His commandments. Jesus told us to come to Him and find rest. He also said His burden is light.

Matthew 11:28-30
28 “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

These are His commandments to us—they are the simple statements that summarize what He requires of us. They also happen to be easily memorized—dare to take the challenge to do so.

Micah 6:8 NKJV
8 He has shown you, O man, what is good;
And what does the LORD require of you
But to do justly,
To love mercy,
And to walk humbly with your God?

Doing justly and loving mercy is loving one another. Walking humbly with our God is believing on the name of His son Jesus.

John 8:29 NKJV
29 And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.

Jesus describes how He lived and He is our example. Doing the things that please the Father is loving one another and believing on the name of His son Jesus.

Matthew 22:36-40 NKJV
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”
37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

Loving the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind is believing on His Son. Loving your neighbor as yourself is loving one another.

John 6:29 NKJV
29 Jesus answered and said to them,“This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.

In regards to God this is clear: believe in Him whom the Father sent.

1 John 3:23 NKJV
23 And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.

And here it is stated in one sentence, that we believe on Jesus and love one another.

What is believing on the Son?

John 3:16
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

God the Father demonstrated His love for the world (all mankind) by sending His only begotten Son to take away the sins of the world by dying on a cross and shedding his blood. Those that believe will not perish but have everlasting life. That belief is an active faith of placing your hope in Him and giving Him lordship over your life.

And what is everlasting life? It is truly knowing the Father and the Son.

John 17:3
3 And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

1 John 1:3b
3 … and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.
